Ink & Elegance: Cassie Kerns Graces Bound by Skin Magazine #326

Ink & Elegance: Cassie Kerns Graces Bound by Skin Magazine #326

The intersection of alternative culture and high-fashion minimalism has a new benchmark. In the latest issue of Bound by Skin Magazine (#326), model Cassie Kerns and renowned fashion and swimwear photographer Sherman Orendorf deliver a masterclass in modern, tattoo-forward portraiture.

Captured in a stark, beautifully backlit setting, the cover strips away unnecessary noise to focus entirely on the art of form, ink, and expression.

Orendorf's class in Minimalist Contrast

What makes this cover immediately arresting is the signature soft, high-key lighting executed by Sherman Orendorf. Kerns is seated elegantly on a plush, leather armchair, positioned against a bright, overexposed background that creates a subtle halo effect around her silhouette.

The color palette is deliberately muted and unified. The warm, neutral tones of her high-waisted shorts perfectly match the vintage-inspired heels tucked beneath her. This minimalist styling ensures that the true centerpieces of the image remain front and center: her presence and her extensive tattoo work.

Behind the Lens: A Conversation with Cassie Kerns

To get a closer look at how this striking cover came together, we sat down with Cassie to discuss the creative vision, working with Orendorf, and what this specific feature means to her.

Q: This cover has a very timeless, almost cinematic feel to it. What was the concept going into the studio with Sherman Orendorf that day?

Cassie: We really wanted to strip things back. A lot of alternative photography leans heavily into dark, moody, or hyper-industrial aesthetics. For this shoot, Sherman and I wanted to go the complete opposite direction—bright, clean, and minimalist. By using a soft, neutral palette and that beautiful high-key backlighting he is so skilled at creating, the focus stays entirely on the human silhouette and how the ink flows naturally with the body's curves.

Q: Speaking of the ink, the cover beautifully showcases a mix of styles on your body, from delicate florals to heavy blackwork. How do you feel the photography highlights your tattoos?

Cassie: I love how Sherman's lighting captures the different textures. The soft light really flatters the fine lines and illustrative details on my arm and side, making them look almost like lace. At the same time, the composition gives plenty of space to the bolder, high-contrast piece on my thigh. Your tattoos tell a story of different chapters in your life, and this shot treats them like the fine art they are.

Q: Your poses are a balance between quiet vulnerability and total confidence. How do you channel that energy in front of the camera?

Cassie: Honestly, it’s all about trust and comfort on set, and Sherman is incredible at building that environment. When the styling is minimal, there’s nowhere to hide, which can feel vulnerable at first. But there’s an incredible sense of empowerment that comes with that. Bringing my hair forward and keeping the pose simple—just that quiet moment with a finger to my lip—creates a sense of mystery. It invites the viewer in rather than demanding their attention. I think that subtle confidence is always more compelling than something over-the-top.

Vulnerability Meets Confidence

Kerns’ performance and Orendorf's eye on this set are powerful reminders that alternative publications are delivering some of the most sophisticated portraiture in media today. Issue #326 isn't just a gallery of tattoos; it's a celebration of body autonomy and fine art.
